At some point in your life you’ve probably done a bit of volunteer work. Perhaps it was for school – a club activity or something to put on your college applications. Maybe your parents forced you to. You might’ve even chosen to do it on your own. Either way, I hope you’ve had experience with volunteering before, and appreciate how rewarding it can be. With that being said, in this article I’ll be discussing why you should volunteer as an adult – and why donating might be another good thing to do, if you’re able.
It’s Rewarding
As I said, volunteering is incredibly rewarding. Not only that, but donating can be its own reward as well – in much the same way. For those with no experience at either, take the dive and give it a try! There really isn’t anything to lose, but there is a lot you could gain from the experience. A lot of people hesitate when trying new things, but if there is no downside, what’s the harm in at least trying it? You could learn a lot about yourself and find a new favorite pastime in the process.
Ignore People Who Try To Guilt-Trip You
Of course, don’t do something you don’t want to do. If you aren’t comfortable giving your time or money away, then you shouldn’t. Don’t let anyone guilt-trip you or tell you that you absolutely have to do it. I think volunteering and donating are rewarding, but I understand it’s not for everyone – and trying to make people feel guilty about it is a bad thing to do. Consider trying them, but ultimately do what is best for you and your situation!
You Don’t Necessarily Have To Do Both
With volunteering and donating, you definitely don’t need to do both. Some people may have tons of money, but no time. In that case, donating might be better for them. Others might find that they can’t really afford to donate much money, but they can contribute their time and skills. In that case, volunteering can be a great option. With that being said, if you have the ability and desire to do both – that’s great too!
Volunteering
There are a lot of good reasons to volunteer. If you aren’t convinced yet, let’s break down some of the aspects and the potential positives that come with the territory.
The Value Of Time
Often, time may be far more valuable than money. Sometimes labor and raw hours are needed to get something done. Donations can help with that, but they usually can’t take care of all the labor required by itself. Your time can be a lifesaver, and it could make a huge impact. It’s easy for people to get caught up with money and donations, while they neglect the value that comes with volunteering your time.
You’re Needed
One way or another, some charity or non-profit really needs you and could benefit greatly from your time. Obviously, you can’t be everywhere, for everyone, at all times. However, if you think that you don’t have anything to bring to the table – rest easy. There is something out there for you, which you’ll be able to contribute a lot to.
Your Skills Are Valuable
If you have any skills, they could add a tremendous amount of value to whatever organization you’re volunteering for. Good with your hands? You could do free repairs or maintenance. Got a knack with technology? You’d be surprised at how much non-profits need help with that. Whatever your skills may be, get creative with it. They likely have some use that would be appreciated as a volunteer.
Everyone Can Do It
The only prerequisite for volunteering is having some free time. That’s it. Most people have that in spades (whether they realize it or not). There is rarely a case where you can’t fit volunteering into a schedule. If you are truly pressed for time, or have a medical condition, perhaps you can’t – but it’s more of an exception than a rule.
You Don’t Need Money
Another good thing is that you don’t need money to start volunteering. Just bring yourself and a good work ethic – that’s all anyone can ask for. If you don’t have a car, depending on the activity, people may even be willing to carpool with you so that you can all do it together.
You Can Gain Skills
For those who don’t have any skills, volunteering can be a valuable time to learn them. Often, with certain activities that require skilled labor, they’re willing to teach you the basics so that you can help them out. Their problem is usually having the raw number of people available who can help – and many of the skills can be quickly learned.
Volunteering Opportunities Are Everywhere
Not sure where to start volunteering? Try local churches, hospitals, animal shelters, and elder care facilities. If none of those sound interesting, you may be able to do something with a library or school – although it tends to vary. Wherever you are, there are undoubtedly tons of opportunities available for you to contribute to your community and volunteer some of your time.
Employee Benefits
One nice thing to know is that some employers actively encourage volunteering. The details vary, but many employers (especially some of the big tech companies) are willing to pay you to volunteer – to an extent. This means that you may be able to get paid by your company to volunteer for a week or two each year!
This is something that not everyone has access to, but it makes volunteering a lot easier. At a minimum, I’d check with your employer or HR representative to see if there are options available to you.
Donating
Considering some donations can be just as rewarding as volunteering your time. It could be a lot or a little – however much you’re comfortable with.
You Can Make A Big Difference
Just like volunteering, donating can make a huge difference. They both help, but in different ways. Money can open doors that raw labor can’t. Your donations could be the make or break for organizations, which can be a great feeling.
Anonymity
A positive of donating, that volunteering doesn’t really have, is that you can remain anonymous. We all have our needs, and a desire for privacy may be one of them. If you enjoy your privacy, and don’t want the attention that volunteering can bring, donating anonymously may be your best option.
It’s An Option For Those With Less Time
Obviously, if you don’t have time then this is the most obvious go-to option. If you don’t have time or money, you may be out of luck. In that case, do your best to carve out the time!
Overall, We Need Both
If you only have the ability to do one, don’t fret. Both deserve their day in the sun, so whatever you can contribute is worthwhile. Appreciate that you can contribute something and enjoy the rewards that come with it. For those who can do both – that’s great!
How Much Do You Value Community?
If you aren’t convinced yet, consider how much you value your community. Is it a lot – or not at all? If you value your community and want to see it prosper, then you can see the need for donations and volunteering.
Conclusion
Hopefully this convinced you to volunteer or donate – perhaps even both. If you do, I hope you enjoy the process! For more content like this, and a free budgeting template and financial goals worksheet, be sure to sign up for the Bitter to Richer newsletter.
